MUA of the Month: Alice Bizarre

February 28, 2017

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I'm Alice Bizarre, I’m 25, married and I do SFX make up, props, models and prosthetics.

How did you decide/become an MUA?

I had no idea what I wanted to do in life so after I got on art foundation a year early I decided to do a course in theatre make up for a year, that’s what started it all really.

What would you say is the most enjoyable part of your job?

I love creating monsters, meeting people, and making people look different, whether it be style, body or creature.

Is there anything that you don’t like/would change at all?

The difficulty finding work and rejection can be really tough!

Proudest moments of your career??

As a make-up artist? Either my first make up film credit (slasher house movie) or my first magazine cover (Skin Deep)

Professional goals for 2017?

Honestly, getting back into the work! I'm pregnant and my baby is due in August so sadly the professional life is a little on hold!

If you weren’t an MUA, what do you think you’d be doing instead?

Well I do props and models (it’s what I’m trained in from university) so I could carry on that! But if all that was out the window, maybe a film maker/writer etc.

What’s your opinion on the current industry and do you think it’s represented equally by male and female MUA’s?

There are plenty of MUA's in all areas of make up! And most of very equal but I find in SFX there are more men when it comes to sculpting/the more workshop based stuff!

If you could change one thing, what would it be?

I do wish I had gotten into make-up much, much earlier, I was a total tomboy so I wasn't interested ‘til my late teens.

Where do you think we’ll see your work next? Are there any projects you’re working on at the moment?

I have a feature/cover in the next Devolution magazine! I was working on a few designs for short films but again, nothing is set in stone due to the baby!

If you could pick a few favourite images, what would they be?

Probably my work with Dan Thomas. It shows how I mix my university course with my make-up work (as it wasn't a make-up course) by doing costume, body painting, and I made the silicone mask, It’s based on what a vampire may look like mummified /an Egyptian princess

If there was piece of advice you could give young Alice when she started, what would it be?

Know your limits, know when to sleep. I think if I had thought more about that then I would be less tired/fed up these days
